If you want to have a more sustainable lifestyle, the first step is to implement small changes in your day-to-day life – separate the garbage, consume more consciously and follow the logic of reuse. To help you be more sustainable and eco-friendly, we’ve listed some attitudes you can take that, when added together, contribute a lot to the environment. Check it out and put it into practice!

don’t waste food

In order to have a conscious and sustainable consumption, one of the main tips is to have total control over the amount of food purchased and the way in which it is stored (so that nothing spoils or is wasted). Ideally, you should always make a list and buy only the items you will actually use, without overdoing it.

Also, remember to store all foods properly – grains, cereals and seeds, such as rice, beans, lentils, chia and granola, should be stored in airtight glass jars. So they stay away from moths and moisture. When we take more care and control with our food, we avoid waste and the environment is very grateful!

Have you ever heard of composting?

Have you ever heard of the practice of composting? This procedure consists of transforming husks and food waste into fertilizer, which you can use directly on houseplants. For those who have a home garden, it is even more important. After all, composting is a great way to reuse organic waste from home and reduce negative impacts on the environment. To do this, you will only need a composter (box to carry out the process), earthworms and dry garbage (leaves and garden waste).

Avoid using plastic bags, as there are great ecobags for carrying your groceries

In many countries around the world – such as Rwanda, the Netherlands, Bangladesh and Taiwan – the use of plastic bags is completely prohibited. After all, as many people already know, plastic is a material that takes 200 years or more to decompose in the environment.

So, if you want to have a really sustainable lifestyle, the best tip is to abolish (or at least reduce) the use of plastic bags. A good alternative for this is to take ecobags (sustainable fabric bags) to shop at the supermarket. There are also cloths that you can use to separate different types of vegetables, fruits, vegetables and greens. These days, many people also resort to reusable kits – with stainless steel straws and silicone cups that replace plastic ones.

Recycle garbage

A basic tip that everyone can do is to separate and recycle waste. To do this, just separate them according to the categories: organic waste, plastic, glass, paper and metal. Also, don’t forget about items that must be disposed of differently (in a special waste), such as batteries, thermometers and electronics. They must be sent to proper recycling stations, so look for a place in your city that does this special disposal.

Do not dispose of cooking oil in the sink

A lot of people don’t know, but cooking oil also needs to be disposed of in a different way – stored in a pet bottle and taken to its own recycling station. When poured directly into a kitchen sink, toilet or drain, the oil ends up contaminating groundwater and soil. So, remember to throw him away the right way, ok?
